I hadn’t seen my friend Aileen for ages and the Aberdeen Restaurant Week deal at Pizza Express was a great excuse to treat ourselves to lunch and a catch-up.
The restaurant was quiet when we arrived but as it wasn’t even midday, we’d expected this – with a baby and toddler in tow we’d opted for an early lunch. The restaurant is really relaxed and situated in the centre of Belmont Street, so a great spot to pop into if you’re in town and need a quick but tasty meal. We grabbed a few soft drinks and began perusing the menu.
With a few starters to choose from we went for a garlic bread with mozzarella and a plate of the famous pizza express doughballs. They arrived quickly and having skipped breakfast, I devoured the moreish garlic bread pretty quickly while Aileen took her time on the freshly baked doughballs, giving both the kids one to chomp on too.
We had the choice of almost the full menu for our main course, including choices of classic or leggera pizza, salad or an al forno dish. When in Pizza Express I feel it’s essential to have pizza, so I swiftly ordered my usual choice of Pollo Ad Astra which is genuinely my favourite pizza in the world! Featuring tender roast chicken, sweet peppadew peppers, red onion, tasty mozzarella, tomato, plus added cajun spices and garlic oil. So good! It normally comes on a larger, thinner romana base but I prefer the classic base and it was no problem to switch.
Aileen opted for the La reine pizza including italian ham, black olives, mushrooms, along with the expected mozzarella and tomato. My son Innes also loves this pizza so a mini version was added to the order. The pizzas arrived promptly after our starters, fresh from the oven and smelling delicious.
We both really enjoyed our pizzas and cleared our plates while we chatted. My little one had begun tearing around the restaurant and terrorising the other diners by this point so we thought it best to make a swift getaway! At only £10 for two courses, what a great deal for a delicious lunch!
