The Braided Fig

I was rather excited when I heard I was chosen to go to The Braided Fig for a tasty meal for my second Aberdeen Restaurant Week menu.

The Braided Fig is an intimate little restaurant situated along Summer Street in the city centre.

From the moment we walked in, I was positive we would have a great dining experience. The restaurant is decorated with the focal point of a large tree in front of the bar, sprinkled in fairy lights surrounded my low, comfy seats perfect for a chilled and warming atmosphere while you enjoy a well deserved drink. The added extras of wooden decor and menus, and green colour palette really helped to create the vision of their Fig tree aesthetic.

THE FOOD

We opted for the dinner menu, which is 3 courses for £20 during Aberdeen Restaurant Week.

There is a good mix of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes on the menu so that everyone can enjoy a lovely meal.

THE STARTERS

There are three starters to choose from. These include the Soup of the Day, Chicken Liver Parfait and Cullen Skink.

For my starter, I chose the Chicken Liver Parfait. This is a beautifully presented dish served on toasted brioche bread, red onion jam and crispy chicken skins. The smoothness and richness of the delicious chicken pate on the crunchy toast and the crisp chicken skins is a great mix of flavours and textures that work really well together. I am a huge fan of pate and this dish did not disappoint.

My partner, Blair, went for his new favourite of Cullen Skink, after his brilliant first impression at our first ARW restaurant. Once again, he thoroughly enjoyed the Cullen Skink. The soup is creamy and flavoursome with fish that melts in your mouth and is served alongside warm, thick bread. I had a taste and I'd love to go back and have a full bowl sometime.

THE MAIN COURSES

The Braided Fig has the choice of Pan Roasted Chicken Supreme, North Sea Cod and Mac 'N' Cheese (with the option to add toppings if you desire) on their evening menu.

North Sea Cod was on the menu so my mind was quickly drawn to this. As with the starters, the dish was presented incredibly well. The cod is served on a bed of a chorizo, chickpea and pepper stew, which are just a few of my favourites tastes. The flavours of the stew are mouthwatering and complemented the fresh cod perfectly. This is definitely a meal I would rush back to the restaurant for; I don't think I stopped for air the whole time I was enjoying it.

Blair loved the sound of the Pan Roasted Chicken Supreme dish. This is served with a creamy potato mash, haggis bon bon, carrot puree, roasted vegetables with a whiskey and grain mustard jus. We both decided that this meal was like a 'posh roast dinner'. The different textures give the dish a deliciously interesting aspect but still had that hearty, home comfort feel that we all love from a Sunday dinner. Blair thought the chicken was cooked beautifully and that even the vegetables were prepared so well and packed with flavour that they were even a high point of the meal.

THE DESSERTS

We tried both of the desserts on the menu. These are the Chocolate Brownie and Sticky Toffee Banana Pudding.

My favourite all-time desserts are sticky toffee pudding and banoffee pie so the Sticky Toffee Banana Pudding was a definite choice for me. The dessert is served with caramelised banana and vanilla bean ice cream, with a small pot of warm toffee sauce to drizzle all over. Or in my case, drown all over the plate because it was delicious and I have a major sweet tooth. The sponge is moist, the sauce is rich and the ice cream is creamy, along with the crunch of the caramelised banana. All the best points of an appetising dessert. This went down an absolute treat.

The Chocolate Brownie dessert is what Blair opted for and very much so relished. The brownie is served with a warm chocolate sauce sprinkled over the plate, popcorn and an After Eight chocolate, as well as a gorgeous After Eight Ice cream. The brownie is soft and satisfied his sweet tooth brilliantly. The fresh mint taste of the After Eight ice cream is glorious and worked well to balance out the intense sweetness of all the chocolate in this dish.

We were incredibly happy with our meal at The Braided Fig and came away feeling happy and content. It's the perfect place for a Saturday date night. We will definitely be heading back there again very soon and hope you enjoy your time there as much as we did.
